Account Abstraction and ERC-4337: A Practical Guide
A clear, data-driven guide to account abstraction and erc-4337.
The problem
Externally owned accounts depend on a single private key and must pay gas in ETH. Losing the key means losing funds, and new users must acquire ETH before doing anything.
ERC-4337
Deployed on mainnet on March 1, 2023, ERC-4337 introduces UserOperations sent to an alt-mempool, bundlers that package them, and a singleton EntryPoint contract that validates and executes them without protocol changes.
Paymasters
Paymasters sponsor gas or accept ERC-20 tokens, so apps can offer gasless onboarding. Base and Polygon apps frequently subsidize first transactions.
Smart wallet features
Smart accounts such as Safe, Coinbase Smart Wallet and Argent support social recovery, session keys, spending limits, batched calls and passkey signing via secp256r1.
EIP-7702
Included in the Pectra upgrade, EIP-7702 lets existing EOAs temporarily delegate to smart contract code, bringing batching and sponsorship to current addresses.
By the numbers
For Account Abstraction and ERC-4337, the reference figures are topic of Account Abstraction and ERC-4337, level of Intermediate, updated of 2026. The comparison table below lines up component, role — UserOperation: Intent-like transaction object; Bundler: Submits batches to EntryPoint; EntryPoint: Validates and executes; Paymaster: Sponsors gas.
Modeling Account Abstraction and ERC-4337 with the Smart Contract Deployment Gas Estimator
The Smart Contract Deployment Gas Estimator takes three inputs — Bytecode (bytes), Gas price (gwei), ETH price ($). Gas ≈ 32,000 + 200 × bytes. With its default inputs (Bytecode (bytes) = 12000; Gas price (gwei) = 20; ETH price ($) = 3000) it returns 145.92 $; swap in the figures from Account Abstraction and ERC-4337 above to reproduce the scenario yourself.
Modeling Account Abstraction and ERC-4337 with the Batch Airdrop Multisend Gas Calculator
The Batch Airdrop Multisend Gas Calculator takes three inputs — Recipients, Gas price (gwei), ETH price ($). Gas ≈ 21k + 30k per recipient. With its default inputs (Recipients = 500; Gas price (gwei) = 15; ETH price ($) = 3000) it returns 675.95 $; swap in the figures from Account Abstraction and ERC-4337 above to reproduce the scenario yourself.
