The Bitcoin Genesis Block (2009): Block 0 and the Chancellor Headline
How Satoshi Nakamoto's Block 0 launched Bitcoin with an unspendable 50 BTC reward and a timestamped newspaper headline.
The block that has no parent
Block 0 was timestamped 18:15:05 UTC on January 3, 2009, with the header hash 000000000019d6689c085ae165831e934ff763ae46a2a6c172b3f1b60a8ce26f. Its previous-block field is 32 zero bytes because nothing came before it. Satoshi Nakamoto's client did not mine it over the network; the block is compiled directly into Bitcoin Core as chainparams, which is why every node on earth agrees on the same starting point without any negotiation.
Why the 50 BTC can never move
The coinbase transaction pays 50 BTC to a pay-to-pubkey output, but the original client never added that transaction to the unspent output database. As a result the coins are permanently unspendable, and people have since sent thousands of small donations to the genesis address 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa, all equally frozen. The supply cap of roughly 21 million therefore already includes coins that nobody can ever spend.
The six-day gap to block 1
Block 1 was not mined until January 9, 2009, the same day version 0.1 was announced on the cryptography mailing list. Historians still debate the gap: one theory says Satoshi tested the software privately; another says the genesis timestamp was deliberately set earlier to match the newspaper. Hal Finney received the first person-to-person transaction, 10 BTC in block 170, on January 12, 2009.
Difficulty one and the first hashes
The genesis header encodes nBits 0x1d00ffff, the minimum difficulty of 1. At that target a single CPU could find a block roughly every ten minutes. Today difficulty exceeds 100 trillion, meaning the network performs on the order of 10^20 hashes per second, while the genesis rules for the 2016-block retarget window and the 210,000-block halving interval remain unchanged.
Reading the headline as a design statement
The coinbase scriptSig encodes the text from The Times front page about the Chancellor and a second bank bailout. Beyond proving the earliest possible mining date, it framed Bitcoin as a fixed-issuance alternative to discretionary monetary policy, a theme Satoshi repeated in the whitepaper's discussion of trusted third parties.
By the numbers
For The Bitcoin Genesis Block, the reference figures are date of January 3, 2009, block height of 0, coinbase reward of 50 BTC (unspendable), embedded text of The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks. The comparison table below lines up field, genesis value — Height: 0; Timestamp: 2009-01-03 18:15:05 UTC; nBits / difficulty: 0x1d00ffff / 1; Nonce: 2,083,236,893; Reward: 50 BTC, unspendable.
Modeling The Bitcoin Genesis Block with the Bitcoin Halving Subsidy Schedule Calculator
The Bitcoin Halving Subsidy Schedule Calculator takes three inputs — Halvings from genesis, BTC price ($), Blocks per day. Daily issuance = 50 ÷ 2^halvings × blocks × price. With its default inputs (Halvings from genesis = 4; BTC price ($) = 65000; Blocks per day = 144) it returns 29,250,000 $; swap in the figures from The Bitcoin Genesis Block above to reproduce the scenario yourself.
Modeling The Bitcoin Genesis Block with the Satoshi To USD BTC Unit Converter
The Satoshi To USD BTC Unit Converter takes three inputs — Satoshis, BTC price ($), Count. USD = sats ÷ 100,000,000 × price. With its default inputs (Satoshis = 100000; BTC price ($) = 65000; Count = 1) it returns 65 $; swap in the figures from The Bitcoin Genesis Block above to reproduce the scenario yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the genesis 50 BTC ever be spent?
No. The output was never added to the UTXO set, so no valid transaction can reference it.
When was block 1 mined?
January 9, 2009, six days after the genesis timestamp, alongside the public release of Bitcoin v0.1.
What is the genesis nonce?
2,083,236,893, which produced a header hash below the difficulty-1 target.
