DePIN Token Economics: A Practical Guide
A clear, data-driven guide to depin token economics.
What DePIN means
Decentralized physical infrastructure networks reward people with tokens for supplying hardware: storage (Filecoin), wireless coverage (Helium), GPU compute (Render) or mapping (Hivemapper).
Supply-side subsidies
Early networks pay emissions to bootstrap supply before demand exists. Filecoin's storage capacity peaked above 17 EiB in 2022, while paid storage deals were a small fraction.
Burn-and-mint equilibrium
Helium and Render use burn-and-mint: customers burn tokens to buy credits at fixed dollar prices, while providers earn newly minted tokens. If burns exceed emissions, supply shrinks.
Metrics
Track revenue paid by users, not just node count. Compute revenue ÷ emissions value as a subsidy ratio; under 1 means the network relies on token inflation.
Risks
Hardware depreciation, regulatory issues for wireless spectrum and dependence on token prices for provider income can all cause supply to churn.
By the numbers
For DePIN Token Economics, the reference figures are topic of DePIN Token Economics, level of Intermediate, updated of 2026. The comparison table below lines up network, resource, model — Filecoin: Storage / Block rewards + collateral; Helium: Wireless / Burn-and-mint; Render: GPU compute / Burn-and-mint.
Modeling DePIN Token Economics with the Supply Emission Inflation Calculator
The Supply Emission Inflation Calculator takes three inputs — Supply (M), Daily emission (K), Days. Inflation = daily emission × days ÷ supply. With its default inputs (Supply (M) = 1000; Daily emission (K) = 500; Days = 365) it returns 18.25 %; swap in the figures from DePIN Token Economics above to reproduce the scenario yourself.
Modeling DePIN Token Economics with the Protocol Revenue PE PS Calculator
The Protocol Revenue PE PS Calculator takes three inputs — Market cap ($M), Annual revenue ($M), Holder earnings share (%). P/E = market cap ÷ (revenue × holder share). With its default inputs (Market cap ($M) = 2000; Annual revenue ($M) = 200; Holder earnings share (%) = 30) it returns 33.33 x; swap in the figures from DePIN Token Economics above to reproduce the scenario yourself.
Data Table
| Network | Resource | Model |
