Protocol Revenue, Real Yield and P/E: A Practical Guide

A clear, data-driven guide to protocol revenue, real yield and p/e.

Fees versus revenue

Fees are what users pay; revenue is the portion kept by the protocol or token holders after paying LPs and suppliers. Uniswap generates billions in fees but, without the fee switch, near-zero holder revenue.

Real yield

Real yield distributes protocol revenue in established assets such as ETH or USDC rather than newly minted tokens. GMX popularized the term in 2022 by sending 30 percent of fees to GMX stakers in ETH or AVAX.

P/E and P/S

Price-to-sales = market cap ÷ annualized fees; price-to-earnings = market cap ÷ holder revenue. A $2 billion protocol with $200 million revenue and 30 percent to holders has a P/E of about 33.

Annualizing carefully

Use 30- or 90-day revenue to smooth spikes, and subtract token incentives to get earnings. Token Terminal and DefiLlama show both fees and incentives.

Comparisons

Hyperliquid's buybacks in late 2024 implied low multiples relative to growth, while governance-only tokens often trade at high multiples with no cash flow.

By the numbers

For Protocol Revenue, Real Yield and P/E, the reference figures are topic of Protocol Revenue, Real Yield and P/E, level of Intermediate, updated of 2026. The comparison table below lines up protocol (illustrative), mcap, holder revenue, p/e — A: $2B / $60M / 33; B: $500M / $50M / 10; C: $5B / $0 / n/a.

Modeling Protocol Revenue, Real Yield and P/E with the Protocol Revenue PE PS Calculator

The Protocol Revenue PE PS Calculator takes three inputs — Market cap ($M), Annual revenue ($M), Holder earnings share (%). P/E = market cap ÷ (revenue × holder share). With its default inputs (Market cap ($M) = 2000; Annual revenue ($M) = 200; Holder earnings share (%) = 30) it returns 33.33 x; swap in the figures from Protocol Revenue, Real Yield and P/E above to reproduce the scenario yourself.

Modeling Protocol Revenue, Real Yield and P/E with the MCAP To TVL Ratio Calculator

The MCAP To TVL Ratio Calculator takes three inputs — Market cap ($M), TVL ($M), Price ($). MC/TVL = market cap ÷ total value locked. With its default inputs (Market cap ($M) = 800; TVL ($M) = 1000; Price ($) = 4) it returns 0.8 x; swap in the figures from Protocol Revenue, Real Yield and P/E above to reproduce the scenario yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are incentives a cost?

Yes, token emissions dilute holders and should be subtracted.

What is a fee switch?

A governance change to route fees to holders.

Is a low P/E always cheap?

Not if revenue is falling.
